O Love That Will Not Let Me Go

Oh love that will not let me go
I rest my weary soul in thee
I give thee back the life I owe
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be

Oh light that followest all my wayI yield my flickering torch to thee
My heart restores its borrowed ray
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be

Oh joy that seekest me through pain
I cannot close my heart to thee
I trace the rainbow through the rain
And feel the promise is not vain
That morn shall tearless be

Oh cross that liftest up my head
I dare not ask to fly from thee
I lay in dust’s life’s glory dead
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be

Seasons

Not too long ago we watched the Friends Reuinion. I’ll admit my expectations were lowered some after I realized the setup of the show was the cast commentating on the show through the years. What I found was the opposite. I remembered just how funny the show was. However, I learned why it resonated with so many people, and oddly saw clarity to some seasons of life. We all have seasons where we feel more connected to people, and you find there is a unique bond that as years go on you can’t quite replicate.

As the reunion came to an end they spoke to the topic of why they have not come together to record more episodes. The answer was that in order to come back together to record a new episode they would have to unravel some story line, and they didn’t want to unravel any of them. Rather it was a season in their lives where they needed each other, they grew together, and when the time came they grew into the next phase.

I am thankful for those seasons in our lives.

Favorite Places

After more than a year at home. I’m thankful to work at home, but thankful for favorite places that allow you to have a different view. It’s important to look at the world outside your window, and quit thinking about yourself.

Reflections

I was sad that we didn’t go to bed, or wake up to snow this past weekend. However, as I headed out Sunday morning the sun reflected off the road just like it does after a fresh snow. I like many other have found myself reflecting on myself way too much after almost a year of isolation. Tonight as I saw this picture I was reminded that light is so much brighter when it is reflecting off of us than when it’s shining on us.

“When we put ourselves in others shoes we can give them hope, we can give them a brighter day, we can help make a difference in their lives.”

Tim Tebow

The bumps are what you climb on

We found this book yesterday. Though it was written in 1980 I find these words are so timely today. I am thankful that Jesus is with us, and that he hasn’t changed!

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. – Hebrews 13:8

Look at the Whole Board

Seeing as I love The West Wing I was thrilled by the recent reunion. President Bartlet said, “See the Whole Board”. I’m reminded tonight that this season of life is no different, and it’s important to “See the Whole Board.”

Bloom Where You’re Planted!

I bought these roses for my wife. However, there is something unique about them. When we bought them they were dying on the clearance rack. So, you may think we beat the odds by planting them in some amazing soil. Well, that’s not quite accurate either as we have terrible soil, but I did try to add some soil to help. In just a few short weeks we saw several roses bloom. Today we walked out to see this.

So, remember to bloom where you’re planted. You may look a little rough when you arrive, the environment may not be the best, but if you decide to bloom God can make something beautiful.

Remembering Rich

I was reminded earlier that 23 years ago today Rich Mullins passed away. We were blessed by his music, and in the years after he passed I learned a lot from how he lived his life. Here are some words from one of his concerts on Step by Step.

This is yet another prayer song. Sometimes I find it hard to pray. Maybe that’s why I’ve written so many prayer songs because it’s easier to sing sometimes. God may find it more entertaining than if you just say it too. Who knows? Except I’m not sure if God’s all that concerned about being entertained. Maybe that’s just a human thing. Sometimes you try to impress God with all the right words. I just don’t think it’s an easy thing to impress God Almighty.

Here’s the thing that I think we often forget is that we don’t have to impress him. He’s already knocked out about you. He already loves you more than you can imagine.

I remember reading a thing Picaso once said. I like to read what famous artists have to say because I’m barely able to look at their paintings without going into a coma trying to figure out what it’s about. He said that ‘good taste is the enemy of great art’ which I think is very true. Good taste has all to do with being cultured and being refined. If art has to do with anything, it has to do with being human.

One of the reasons I love the Bible is because the humans in the Bible were not very refined. They’re pretty goofy if you want to know whole the truth about.

I remember when I was a kid – I was one of those typical, depressed adolescent types. I wrote poetry and stuff. That’s how morose I was as a kid. People would say “Cheer up because God love you.” And I would say “Big deal, God loves everybody. That don’t make me special. That just proves that God aint got no taste”.

And I don’t think He does. Thank God. Because God takes the junk of our lives and he makes the greatest art in the world out of it. And if He was cultured and He was as civilized as most Christian people wish He was… He would be useless to Christianity.

But God is a wild man. And I hope in the course of your life you encounter Him. But let me warn you, you need to hang on for dear life…or let go for dear life.”

Oh Love That Will Not Let Me Go

TEXT:George MathesonMUSIC:Christopher Miner

1. O Love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

2. O light that followest all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.

3. O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.

4. O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.
